Diamond Testing

Our diamonds are natural and we are proud to confirm this by being the first owner in New Zealand of the GIA iD100, which in recent independent testing scored a perfect 100% in detecting synthetic diamonds and diamond simulants. This level of expertise has become essential to provide reliable assurances as to the genuine nature and origin of any diamond.

The grading of any non-certified diamonds is ensured to be accurate with GIA facetware technology, so we can provide precise cut grades and weight measurements. The GIA colour master stones allow us to provide accurate colour grading, and one of our two in-house GIA trained gemmologists assesses clarity by international standards.

We are constantly working to ensure we are at the forefront of quality assurance.

Technology & Testing

At Walker & Hall we are constantly working to ensure we are at the forefront of quality assurance so that we can be proud to put our name on and stand behind every piece. We make continual and significant investments in technology in order to maintain our core goals of 'Integrity, Quality and Service'.

We ensure the accuracy and quality of the precious metal components of our jewellery with an Olympus XRF machine. Our on-site XRF machine identifies and reports on the fineness and purity of any metals present in a given alloy, right down to minor traces, providing surety and accuracy of materials.

We care about quality.

Understanding the Lifespan of Your Jewellery

Every piece of jewellery we create is made with care, craftsmanship, and quality materials designed to last. However, like all cherished possessions, jewellery experiences natural wear over time. The lifespan of a piece depends on several factors — including how and where it’s worn, how often it’s worn, and the wearer’s lifestyle.

How Different Pieces Wear Over Time

Not all jewellery experiences the same level of wear.
• Rings and Bracelets:
These pieces are exposed to the most wear and pressure because they are worn on the hands and wrists. Daily contact with hard surfaces and physical activity contribute to gradual wear.
• Rings
should be checked yearly and may require maintenance such as claw re-tipping or replacement every 7 years, depending on wear.
• Bracelets, especially designs incorporating fine links such as tennis bracelets, these links can wear over time. After around 5–8 years, they may need to be repaired or where impractical because of the number of links remade using the original materials.
• Earrings and Necklaces:
These items usually experience minimal direct contact and tend to last considerably longer with minimal maintenance beyond regular cleaning and occasional checking of clasps and fittings.

How Lifestyle Affects Jewellery Longevity

Each wearer’s habits and level of activity have a significant influence on how long jewellery lasts. Someone who wears a ring every day will see more wear than someone who reserves it for special occasions. Likewise, those with more hands-on or active lifestyles will experience faster wear on pieces worn on the hands and wrists.

Activities such as golf, sailing, racquet sports, gardening, gym workouts, or lifting heavy items such as suitcases place high pressure on jewellery and may cause distortion and damage. Jewellery should always be removed during such activities to prevent unnecessary wear or structural stress which will impact gem security.

Our Commitment and Your Care

We stand by the quality and craftsmanship of every piece we make. With regular professional care and mindful wear, your jewellery can last beautifully for many years and even generations. However, natural wear and tear over time is expected and not considered a manufacturing fault.

To help extend the life of your jewellery, we recommend:

  • Regular servicing yearly to check claws, links, clasps, and settings.
  • Removing jewellery especially rings and bracelets when undertaking physical activity.
  • Keeping jewellery away from harsh chemicals, perfumes, and cleaning products.

By caring for your jewellery and understanding the unique nature of each piece, you can ensure it continues to bring joy and brilliance for many years to come.
