I am a self-taught painter, working primarily in acrylics on canvas. I also draw on my experience in printmaking and illustration, whenever I feel the need to explore a multimedia approach. As much as I enjoy the practice of detailed observation that figurative work involves, I often look between styles or techniques for balance or change.

Typically, I like to examine broader themes of life and loss and the emptiness of the unknown that underscores our existence. I am interested in how we often hope to apply balance to this paradigm through the personal acts of faith and belief. These themes are expressed throughout my work in various motifs and symbols.

I grew up on Waiheke Island and much of my work draws from the surrounding landscape. However, my work is also informed by many years spent living in London and Tokyo. I have recently returned to my family home, Waiheke, where I keep a small studio. - Tom Wilson
