Daughter holding Mum's pearl strand

Mother's Day interview with our fave designers!

We caught up with a few of our favourite NZ designers to talk about celebrating their mums, Mother’s Day and good advice. Read more from our catch up with Boh, Zoe and Nick…

Boh Runga

How do you celebrate Mother’s Day?

Usually us siblings get together and take mum out for dinner. It doesn't necessarily have to be on Mother's Day, tho as it depends on if Mum feels like going out. Else we bring food. Bringing food is always good.

If you could design a piece of jewellery for your mum, what would it look like?

It would be a bit like Willie Wonka's Golden Ticket except when worn it is accepted by all major airlines that fly to Malaysia and permits my mum First Class return passage to visit family anytime she wants.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from your mum?

There has been much advice given over the years. But the one that always makes me smile is when I went on a tv show for some interview and called mum after.

"Was it alright, mum?"

She looked at me and said, "Boh, you need to draw on more eyebrows. You didn't have enough eyebrows for television."
My mother is very wise.

Zoe & Morgan

Annual event to celebrate mama. Mum loved it when I became a mother partly to be involved with her grandchildren, and partly to say - ha! see it's amazing isn't it? How challenging, and full of love. I did this with three children.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from your mum?

She’s been into an alternative way of living since the early 60s and brought us up on organic food and creative activities. But she's also really into good design in fashion, intelligent, cheeky, and laughs allot. I think the best advice Mum gave me is ‘Don't just settle for what is presented in life; research and decide for yourself.’I've used this to design a good lifestyle for myself and design a business structure that supports this. I've never wanted to follow a normal path, so inventing one seems more logical, and mum's encouragement made that a reality

If you could design a piece of jewellery for your mum, what would it look like? Or is there a item from your collection that is inspired by your mum?

I would give my mum these Piwakawaka Ear Jackets or these Shine Ear Jackets for Mother's Day!

What would be your ultimate mum date (e.g. Your fave thing to do with your kids)?

For mother's day this year, we will be going on a beach or bush walk with my lil guys, and ending up on Auckland's waterfront for a high tea.

Nick Von K

How do you celebrate Mother’s Day?

On Mother's Day my sister and I always take my Mum out to lunch.

We go somewhere a little bit quaint and classy, like the old style cafe in the One Tree Hill gardens - somewhere where they do a really good cup of tea.

I make sure I write her something personal in a card which basically tells her that I think she is freakin awesome.

If you could design a piece of jewellery for your mum, what would it look like? Or is there a item from your collection that is inspired by your mum?

My mum loves traveling so I think what I could do is make her a little charm for each place she has been, or is about to go to.

She could have them all on a charm bracelet and I could just keep adding them as we go along.

I could even add in charms representing things we have done together or for each member of the family.

I think she would really love that - jeez, I might just have to do it!!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from your mum?

My Mum has a lot of good sense, she has a very level head and a designers eye.

A couple of years ago we bought a house together, for me to live in and as an investment for her.

We've spent a lot of time renovating it and it always surprises me how many good ideas she has for it.

I don't need to hire an interior designer or an architect, I just ask my Mum.

Enjoy mother's day all you wonderful mothers x
